How to use dynamic Labeling

Use Dynamic labeling when working with AlignStar documents containing dense concentrations of accounts or small map objects. Dynamic labeling allows you to easily view, query, select and realign accounts or map objects that may be obscured or overlapping. The dynamic label tool also allows you to perform these operations without the need to zoom into an area.  

To display labels using the dynamic label tool

  1. Select the Dynamic label tool from the toolbar. If the tool is inactive or grayed out you will need to zoom in closer using the Zoom tool before using Dynamic labels. Your cursor changes to the Dynamic label cursor dynamic label cursor.

  2. Move the cursor over the area on the map that you would like to see. The Dynamic label feature immediately begins to work displaying up to 40 labels at once with spider leg connectors from each label to the associated account or map object on the map.

To select map objects or accounts for alignment using the Dynamic label tool

  1. Select the Dynamic label tool from the toolbar. If the tool in inactive or grayed out you will need to zoom in closer using the Zoom tool before using Dynamic labels. Your cursor changes to the Dynamic label cursor dynamic label cursor.

  2. Move the cursor over the area on the map that you would like to see. The Dynamic label feature immediately begins to work displaying up to 40 labels at once with spider leg connectors from each label to the associated account on the map.

  3. Click once on the area of the map that you want to work on and the Dynamic labels lock in place allowing you to select other tools and perform actions.

To de-select an area using the Dynamic label tool

  1. Select the Dynamic label tool from the toolbar. Click anywhere on the map. The Dynamic labels become de-selected.

  2. Alternatively you can make a change to your map view using any of the navigation tools and your Dynamic labels will be de-selected.

  3. Click once on the area of the map that you want to work on and the Dynamic labels lock in place allowing you to select other tools and perform actions.

LightbulbTips:

  • Once you have locked your label selection using the Dynamic label tool, use the Alignment tool for any realignment operations. Both point and click and Drag and Drop alignment techniques will work on Dynamic labels.

  • Right click on any locked Dynamic label and use the available context menu items for various actions.

 

Notes:

  • If the Dynamic label tool is not active this means that your label density is too high. Zoom in until the tool becomes active and then proceed.

  • To change the labels that appear with the Dynamic label tool, go to the Link Maintenance dialog and change the variable used for labeling in the drop down provided.

  • The radius used for displaying Dynamic labels will automatically vary with the density of accounts or map objects.
